A recreational use advisory in place since Friday for 20 miles of the French Broad River because of a sewage spill has been lifted. The advisory against fishing, swimming, wading, tubing, rafting, and other recreational activities was issued after a Buncombe County Metropolitan Sewerage District sewer line break at 7 McDowell St. caused more than 420,000 gallons of sewage to escape into Town Branch, which flows into the French Broad River.
How common are fuel oil spills in the French Broad River? The wastewater in Town Branch was pumped into a manhole that flows to the wastewater treatment plant. The cleanup was completed and the dam removed on Tuesday afternoon. This is the 29th sewage spill, known as a sanitary sewer overflow, into the French Broad River within the past year.
