Comment Period Open on New Tennessee Trout Regs

- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Fisheries Division presented its proposed 2019-20 fishing regulation proposals during the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission’s August meeting held at TWRA’s Region II Ray Bell Building. The public is invited to provide comments on the proposals. The deadline for sport fishing comments is Sept. 14. To provide comments, email TWRA at fishingreg.comments@tn.gov, or write to TWRA Fisheries Division, P.O. Box 40747, Nashville, TN 37204.

The TFWC will vote on the sport fish and commercial fish regulations at its Sept.20-21 meeting to be held in Knoxville. If approved, the sport fishing changes would become effective March 1, 2019.

Big Lost Creek, Goforth Creek, Spring Creek, and Greasy Creek and their tributaries in Polk County are open to fishing on Fridays from March 1 to June 1. Use or possession of multiple hook lures or bait is permitted. Statewide trout regulations would apply to these streams. This proposal adds fishing opportunity during the spring trout stocking period.

Tellico-Citico Permit requirement dates for Tellico River from its confluence with Turkey Creek upstream to the Tennessee-North Carolina state line and Citico Creek from its confluence with Little Citico Creek upstream to the confluence of North and South Forks of Citico Creek during the period of March 15 through September 15 will change to March 1 through August 15. There will be no permit required in these areas from August 16 through last day of February. Stocking locations and stocking period have been limited in past years due to warmer water temperatures in these rivers. This proposal will better align optimal stocking and fishing conditions with the permit season.

Tellico River from Mouth of North River upstream to the Tennessee/North Carolina state line will follow Delayed Harvest regulations from October 1 through the last day of February. This adjustment in the dates of Delayed Harvest season was necessary to facilitate the changes in the permit period.

Tellico River from Sourwood Campground upstream to the dam at Tellico Hatchery from ½ hour before official sunrise to 12 pm will be closed to fishing for individuals 16 and older on Free Fishing Day (which is the first Saturday after first Monday in the month of June).  This proposal will support youth fishing events scheduled on that day each year.

Tellico-Citico Permit requirement dates for Green Cove Pond will change to October 1 through August 15. There will be no permit required in this area from August 16 through September 30. Green Cove Pond will be closed on Thursday and Friday October 1 through August 15 (except open on all state and national holidays and scheduled special organized handicapped or children fishing events). This proposal will better align optimal stocking and fishing conditions with the permit season.

Calderwood Reservoir – Adopting the creel and length limits for gamefish species from North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission on the Tennessee portion of Calderwood Reservoir.  This proposal will simplify regulations on this shared resource.
